SAT Scores - Mathematics divided by Poverty Rate

Is there a correlation between math scores and poverty rate? Given an increasingly analytical world math skills will become more important to compete in the labor force. Knowledge workers should be able to compete globally and with higher value add to economic output as compared to non-knowledge workers.

I chose to divide math scores by poverty rate to create a good numerical separation in the range. The expectation is that high math scores should lead to a lower poverty rate since workers would be employable in higher income knowledge/information processing jobs. Given the equation of math scores divided by poverty rate implies that high scores are expected in states that have high math scores and low poverty rate. Clearly, lag between economic development, supply chain, and personal career paths will make this simple association riddled with problems. The equation is too simplistic to expect a good correlation, but I just wanted to see if this simple equation shows any reasonable trend.

Yep, as I expected, the association doesn't work for complex economies. For example, Texas and New York score poorly on this equation and clearly both are doing fine in the knowledge economy with energy trading, finance, insurance, and other highly analytical industries. Interesting to see is a couple of states that do seem to track: New Hampshire, with lots of software and computer aided engineering companies, scores at rank #1. Minnesota and Illinois track reasonable well too.

So it appears that you need more resolution and map the poverty data into financial strata and see if math skills track financial strata.
