Your analysis of the numbers does not produce an index that provides evidence of the argument that gun ownership force lower crime rates. What the ratio of gun deaths per capita to gun ownership shows is that gun deaths aren't related in a linear way to gun ownership. The index shows that increased gun ownership doesn't directly increase gun deaths by a set amount, and that the more guns a state has, the fewer deaths PER GUN there are.

However, the states with high gun ownership are still less safe, despite having a lower index in this mashup. Texas (1.28) has a lower index than NY (2.83), which is used as an example to "prove" that gun ownership makes a state safer. Except since Texas (10.4) has twice as many gun deaths per 100k people as New York (5.1), Texas is obviously much LESS safe than New York. Texas' lower index is because it has more than 4 times the gun ownership rate of New York, but that just demonstrates that Texas has fewer deaths PER GUN than New York does, not that it's actually safer.

Graphing the data shows a clear trend directly relating gun deaths to gun ownership rates. The higher the percent of gun ownership a state has, the more gun deaths it's likely to have. There are outliers like Washington DC, and the trend is pretty rough, but gun death rates and gun ownership rates are directly related.
